A wonderful surprise

Today was delivered to me a family historian’s dream. I received as part of an estate settlement boxes of family photos. Some of the hundreds of pictures are identified and others I may never know but I cherish them all and cannot believe I am seeing what some of my ancestors looked like!

I had to share today one of my Great Grandfather William Kennedy Yuill who was born in February 1892 in Brooklyn NY. His parents Jessie Kennedy was from Glasgow Scotland and father Alexander Yuill was from Paislely, Renfrewshire Scotland. Very Scottish family to say the least. He was an only child and I think a bit spoiled. This photo shows him in full Scottish tartan. My Grandmother said we are part of Clan Buchanan.

I am back to my boxes of pictures. I want to savor the moment of discovery! I have a lot of great things to post this next year!

  1. What an amazing gift! I was the receiver of all my grandparents photos when they passed, which also included my grandpa’s parents. I can understand how you feel! Enjoy looking through all the pictures!

    1. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world . so much to look at . any ideas on how to organize? I need to get some photo albums with sleeves. And I am going to scan in digitally so my kids will have copies and not fight over who gets the family pictures when they are older.

      1. That was quite difficult to organize for me because I had several generations. I bought some archival photo albums and divided it by family – my grandpa’s in one and my grandmother’s in another. Then I made an album for when my grandparents came together and had their family. It’s interesting to try and figure it out. I am SLOWLY scanning in items so I can send them to family that would like them and just to have a record in case something happens to the pictures. It takes time and to be honest, this is my second round of organizing them as I didn’t like my first idea. Good luck!

      2. I have my maternal and paternal side photos. I might do a book by grand parent so 4 albums. I made a genealogy book years ago of just photos and sent to family members who wanted copies. But it really doesn’t do the pictures justice. I tried to add scans of passports and vital records or other documents so it was a visual history.

      3. I have thought about making one of those books but I still need more clarification on pictures on who is who and when they were taken. It’s a constant work in progress but I love it!
