Oddly Unique Family Recipes

I am sure every family has a recipe for a  the unique dish that has been passed down through generations and has a story attached to it.

I have a recipe that I love and asked for when I came home from college and wanted some homestyle cooking. People at first turn up their nose when it is offered but then say it is delicious once I can convince them to try.

My great grandmother Bertha May Marold used to make this dish to stretch the family grocery budget during the Great Depression and feed a family of 11 a meal that would fill their bellies.

Bertha’s Hot Dogs and Tomato Soup

1 package of hot dogs, sliced
Mashed potatoes
1 can of tomato soup
Water or milk
A small onion
3 tb butter
3 tb flour
Black pepper
Peel and boil potatoes. 
Make a roux by melting butter and adding onion until softened. Then stir in flour. Add a can of tomato soup and about 3 cups of water (can also be milk for a creamier texture).
Add sliced hot dogs and pepper. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes.
Drain and mash potatoes. Add milk and butter to taste.

Serve by making a moat in the potatoes and ladle in the hotdog mixture. Served best with green beans.

  1. That sounds good…except for the tomato soup part (I’m allergic to tomatoes!) I love mashed potatoes mixed in with ANYthing! Do you know they’re great spread on omelettes? Then a dollop of sour cream….oooooh, yummy.
